• DIY Painted Bust for Bloom Theory

We have some very talented and artistic friends.  Maybe being around them is what has started to pull out my creative side.  Two of our besties, Vania and Christine, are the lovely ladies behind Simply Bloom Photography.  If you haven’t heard of them, you should definitely check out their work.  Insane!  Not only are these ladies talented photographers, but they are also the masterminds behind Bloom Theory Straps – one of a kind, glorious, dramatic camera straps designed by them!  V&C are traveling to a huge photography convention next month in Las Vegas where they are going to have a booth featuring their camera straps.  They bought these bust forms from Hobby Lobby and asked me to make them their style to help display their straps.

I saw a Before + After on Design Sponge a while back where they painted the fabric on a couch rather than reupholstering (read that post here).  So I decided to try that on these guys!  I bought some Martha Stewart Gold metallic acrylic craft paint and tintable fabric medium from Michaels.  I followed the directions on the fabric medium and mixed 2 parts paint to 1 part medium.

And here is the result!  I think it turned out wonderfully!  If I wanted full coverage, I would have done at least one other coat – I’m painting black fabric here so I didn’t expect it to cover completely.  However, I actually loved that you could see the white medallions from the original fabric showing through when the light hits it right!  So we decided to stick with one coat.  I spray-painted the base in satin ivory and added some lovely double piping to cover the seams in the fabric and voilà!  The busts in themselves are vintage to me and paired with the modern, metallic gold…love!
